As a result, any Indian public document that needs to be used in a foreign country that is a member of this Convention requires an apostille, not traditional embassy legalization. This is a faster, more simplified process as compared to the older, multi-step legalization procedures that involved embassy and consular verification.

How Indian Apostille Services Work

Apostille services in India are administered by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The MEA is the designated authority responsible for issuing apostilles on Indian documents. The process for obtaining an apostille involves a few essential steps:

  1. State-level Attestation: Before a document can be apostilled, it must be verified by the relevant state-level authorities. For educational documents, this means attestation by the State Education Department, while personal documents like birth or marriage certificates require attestation from the General Administration Department (GAD) or the Home Department of the state from which the document originates.
  2. Submission to MEA: Once state-level attestation is complete, the document is submitted to the MEA for apostille. The apostille is affixed on the reverse side of the document, certifying its authenticity.
  3. Processing Time and Costs: The process typically takes between one and two weeks, although urgent cases can be expedited through authorized agencies or services. Costs for apostille services vary depending on the type of document and the urgency of the request, but generally remain affordable.
